What the file says about Alexandria
- 37 people were killed across 36 fatal crashes — 9% of all deaths in the five Northern Virginia jurisdictions. The worst single year was 2022 with 8.
- 17 of them were walking (45.9% of deaths here, against 36% region-wide and roughly 18% nationally). No cyclist deaths are recorded in this jurisdiction over the seven years.
- 70.6% of pedestrian deaths were after dark (12 of 17), and 8 of 17 happened away from an intersection. In 8 cases the report noted no crosswalk.
- Trucks are a small part of the picture here. 1 of the 37 deaths involved a medium or heavy truck. We publish the figure because we have it, not because it carries a trend at this scale.
- I-495 is the deadliest road in Alexandria — 8 killed, 4 of them on foot.

Methodology
Source is the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) National
CSV downloads for 2018–2024, accessed 2026-08-30. Crashes are
selected on STATE = 51 and the FARS
COUNTY code 510, not on the
CITY code — Arlington County and most of Fairfax County
are unincorporated and file CITY as "not applicable",
so a city-keyed query returns nothing for them.
Population is the 2020 Decennial Census count
(159,467). Pedestrian and cyclist deaths come from the
person file on INJ_SEV = 4; crossing detail from the FARS
pedestrian file joined on (ST_CASE, VEH_NO, PER_NO) and
limited to those who died. FARS is fatal-only and will not show serious
injuries. The
