Every road death in Fairfax County, 2018–2024
Seven years of fatal crashes in Fairfax County — the largest jurisdiction in Northern Virginia and the one carrying most of the region’s deaths.
What the file says about Fairfax County
- 348 people were killed across 328 fatal crashes — 81% of all deaths in the five Northern Virginia jurisdictions. The worst single year was 2022 with 62.
- 121 of them were walking (34.8% of deaths here, against 36% region-wide and roughly 18% nationally). A further 4 were cycling.
- 80.2% of pedestrian deaths were after dark (97 of 121), and 74 of 121 happened away from an intersection. In 69 cases the report noted no crosswalk.
- Trucks are a small part of the picture here. 38 of the 348 deaths involved a medium or heavy truck. We publish the figure because we have it, not because it carries a trend at this scale.
- I-495 is the deadliest road in Fairfax County — 32 killed, 6 of them on foot.

Methodology
Source is the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) National
CSV downloads for 2018–2024, accessed 2026-08-30. Crashes are
selected on STATE = 51 and the FARS
COUNTY code 59, not on the
CITY code — Arlington County and most of Fairfax County
are unincorporated and file CITY as "not applicable",
so a city-keyed query returns nothing for them.
Population is the 2020 Decennial Census count
(1,150,309). Pedestrian and cyclist deaths come from the
person file on INJ_SEV = 4; crossing detail from the FARS
pedestrian file joined on (ST_CASE, VEH_NO, PER_NO) and
limited to those who died. FARS is fatal-only and will not show serious
injuries. The
